About Us

Stewart Nicks was born in Grand Coulee.  He received his education in Grand Coulee, St. John's College in Winnipeg, the University of Saskatchewan, and Queen's University.  This was followed by a 25 year career with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Winnipeg, Toronto, and Stratford, Ontario. 

 

In 1938, Stewart married K. Elizabeth (Betty) Wood.  In 1953 they returned to Grand Coulee to operate the family farm.  At that time. he also started a general insurance agency, L.S. Nicks Insurance.

 

Throughout his life, Dr. Nicks had great interest in all levels of education.  His talents and energies were devoted to 25 years on the local school board; six times a President of the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association; and honorary life member of the Canadian Education Association; co-chair of the Commission to Establish Divisions Three and Four in Saskatchewan schools; and a member of the Royal Commission which led to the founding of the University of Regina.  He was a member of the Senate (1963-1968) and Board of Governors (1967-1972) of the University of Saskatchewan and was honoured by the University of Regina with a Doctor of Laws Degree in 1975.

 

Our school, which officially opened October 8, 1981, was named in his honour.
